Host Belarus Wins UEFS European Championship

BARANOVICHI, Belarus (11-28-04) - Buoyed by strong crowd support and helping itself with strong defense, host Belarus shut out the Czech Republic 4-0 at Atlant Stadium here today to win the European Union of Futsal (UEFS) valery_henrik.jpg (139651 bytes)Championship. Belarus, lead by goalkeeper Alexsander Dergachov and field player Alexander Danilenko, reached the final by defeating Ukraine 5-1, and the Czech Republic, lead by field player Ales Storc, reached the final by defeating Russia 8-6 on penalty kicks following a 5-5 tie in regulation. Belgium won fifth place with a 2-0 victory over Armenia, and Catalonia won seventh place by defeating Norway 6-5 on penalty kicks following a 3-3 tie in regulation.

Belarus and Russia were the tourney favorites. Russia last won the UEFS championship in 1998 in Slovakia.

"Belarus had a strong team with very tight and solid defense," said Kurt Hartvedt of Indoor Football Scandinavia. "They won their group only letting in one goal against the Czech Republic. The Russians had better individual players than Belarus, and even though they lost one match in their group they seemed stronger than the other teams and did not show any signs that they were not capable of winning the European Championship (EC).

"But it became Belarus who won the EC, with enthusiastic fans supporting them all the way."

Hartvedt said he felt that Russia, Ukraine and Norway, even though Norway is a newcomer to Futsal, "have better individual players than Belarus, and I favor such teams, but I believe we all could learn much from the good defense created by Belarus."

Hartvedt said the Czech Republic showed very good defense, "and I am impressed by the teamwork that got them to
the final. Norway, for instance, was leading 2-0 against the Czechs after first half, but the Czech players stayed calm and managed to rise up and win the match through good communication and team work."
