Everybody Plays Futsal at Kahili Adventist School

By Tim Sheldon

KAUAI, Hawaii (12-14-09) – Everybody plays Futsal at Kahili Adventist School in Kauai. All of the students gather in the gym for physical education class and play at the same time. All 23 of them, Kindergarten through 12th Grade..

"The children are enjoying playing," said Principal Wanda Lee, who came to the school two years ago from New Jersey. "We don't have a league or anything like that. We play at P.E. time."

The Kahili School is new to Futsal. They started their school year in July and learned about Futsal the following month.

"The first of August Jorge Bordt came and did a little clinic with the kids, and brought us a ball," Lee said. "And then we went down and purchased a second ball so they would be able to play two games at one time."

The school has a gym with three volleyball courts, and Lee is using the volleyball lines for the games.

"The students enjoy it, and it keeps them all busy at the same time."

Now that Lee has the Futsal program going during P.E., she and the students want to take it a step further.

"Jorge has invited us down to where he teaches (at the Kiahuna Swim & Tennis Club), so we'll go down there and play, like one day a month, and we may start that in January. He is a little more knowledgeable about the game. We had never heard of it before we met Jorge. It really is a good game for all the ages. It isn't a game where they stand around waiting for the ball to come to them. It gives them lots of good exercise.

"When you give the students a choice, that's what they want to play."
